The Galloping Goose Historical Society was founded by a group of Rio
Grande Southern Railroad enthusiasts in Dolores, Colorado as a non-profit
corporation in 1987.
The purpose of the GGHS is to preserve, restore and operate the
Historical Rio Grande Southern Railroad and all necessary equipment, rolling
stock, real property, historical sites and buildings.
Galloping Goose No. 5 was completely restored to operating condition in
1998. It now operates twice a year on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic
Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. (see
schedule link above for details.)
An exact replica of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad's Dolores Depot was
constructed by the Society in 1991. It now houses the Society's
Museum and Gift Shop and is located in the center of Dolores on Railroad
Avenue.
Galloping Goose No. 5 is located in Dolores in the Four Corners area of
Colorado. Dolores
is halfway between Durango and Telluride, only 20 minutes from Mesa
Verde National Park, and we are where the Dolores River forms McPhee
Reservoir, the second largest body of water in Colorado. With the
Dolores River running through town and mountains on both
sides of the valley, Dolores is one of the truly unique vacation
spots in Colorado.
